September in Seoul (Day 2, 2023)

Woke up well before the sun – not shocking considering I broke the first rule of international travel, which is going to bed super early. Ah well, it is a vacation! I did get to watch the sky slowly brighten, and risked dropping my phone for an unobstructed snap of this Namsan view:

A bit of gloom this morning, but beautiful none the less.

After several hours of reading, laying about, and stretching I jumped on a train to have breakfast at Gwangjang Market. Although it was only 10 in the morning, the market was bustling and jammed with people searching for tasty food.

Barley rice bibimbap.

Full of barley rice and fish cake (not pictured) I ventured to the Bukchon Ossuloc tea house. I’ve never had their tea, but have seen reviews that it’s delicious.

I had a camellia flower blooming forest tea over ice with green tea cheesecake. Wow – can confirm, incredibly delicious. I bought another variety, Song of Cloud, which is hands down the best tea I’ve ever tasted. Yum!

Afterwords, I followed some locals who were walking a route to avoid all the tourist traps.

As I headed back towards the subway, I noticed a park filled with…site specific sculptures?

This is how I stumbled on installations for the 2023 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, which I didn’t even know was happening! One piece featured a pond, surrounded by small hills – part of an installation pair, which focused on the concept of earth, the other air.

Inside another installation; the plastic dome was dripping water from its apex. The exposed earth was muddy, bits of ceramic stuck to the shallow walls.

After sitting in the shade and watching people interact with various works, I was in fact a puddle – no longer a person. So, I headed back to my stay to wring out all the sweat and cool off since all of the museums I wanted to visit in the area were closed. I did some shopping in the evening, but won’t bore you with those details. Tomorrow is even warmer, so I’ll delay my planned outdoor adventures and plan for indoor activities instead!
