After a good night of sleep, I woke up and enjoyed the ambience of our home stay. This is my first time staying at a hanok; it’s beautiful and I really enjoy sitting/sleeping on the heated floors.

After breakfast we walked to Scoff, a nearby “American” style bakery. Best eats were the gingerbread and mince pies, which were both subtle in their sweetness and flavor. The Christmas vibe was really great!

There is constant contrast between the shiny new buildings and historic structures visible everywhere.
Fueled by sugar and another dose of caffeine, we braved the freezing wind to visit the the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA). We visited two floors, viewing the Choe-U Ram, Lim Ok-Sang, and Lee Jung-seop exhibitions. The museum itself was a beautiful space and the curation/exhibitions were thoughtful and well suited the artwork.

After the MMCA, we headed over to Insa-dong and ate dumplings with rice cake at Gaeseong Mandu Koong. Perfect lunch to warm us up. At this point in the day it was about -4°F with the windchill.

We browsed Kyobo books then headed out for some night shopping shopping in Myeong-dong, stocking up on socks, CDs, medicinal patches (for my feet!)
There were other places and many more cups of coffee in between everything, a lost hat that was returned, and lots of laughter. A great start to the trip!

Day 2 we’re going to learn some dance moves? I hope my feet can handle it!
